Awareness — policy, aspects and implications understood by workforce

What changed in the 2026 revision

Clause 7.3 requires that persons doing work under the organisation's control are aware of: (a) the environmental policy; (b) significant aspects and their environmental impacts; (c) their contribution to EMS effectiveness and benefits of better performance; (d) the implications of not conforming, including failing compliance obligations.

What auditors will look for

Demonstrate that all persons doing work under the organisation's control (including contractors and agency staff) are aware of the four elements in 7.3. Simple methods — toolbox talks, induction briefings, notice boards, team meetings — satisfy this if documented. Note: Annex A clarifies that awareness does not mean the policy commitments must be memorised; it means workers understand what the policy requires of them in their specific role.

How to close the gap

  1. 1Ensure environmental policy is displayed/communicated to all staff
  2. 2Brief all staff on the significant environmental aspects relevant to their work
  3. 3Communicate the implications of not following EMS requirements
  4. 4Include environmental awareness in induction for new starters and contractors
  5. 5Use toolbox talks or team briefings to reinforce awareness
  6. 6Record awareness communications as documented information
