Two-way feedback and reporting mechanisms
What changed in the 2026 revision
ISO 14001:2026 strengthens communication requirements so that internal communication must empower employees to contribute to continual improvement of the EMS. This goes beyond informing staff about environmental matters — it requires documented mechanisms for employees to communicate upward, report environmental concerns, suggest improvements, and receive feedback on their contributions.
What auditors will look for
Establish clear two-way communication channels where employees can raise environmental concerns, report near-misses, and suggest improvements. Document how employee input feeds into the continual improvement process. Evidence might include an environmental suggestion scheme, regular team briefings with feedback mechanisms, or digital reporting tools.
How to close the gap
- 1Establish an environmental suggestion/feedback mechanism
- 2Create a process for reviewing and responding to employee input
- 3Include employee contributions in management review inputs
- 4Train staff on how to raise environmental concerns
- 5Track and report on improvement suggestions received and acted upon
