How EMSist works
Consultants put their name on our reports, so we show our workings. This page explains exactly how a scan happens, how we keep it honest, and what the tool deliberately does not claim to do.
1. Deterministic rule engine
Your document is checked against 39 rules covering the ISO 14001:2026 clause requirements, cross-validated against BSI's official 2026 executive briefing and the published FDIS clause structure, with particular weight on what changed from 2015 — climate change as a standing context element, biodiversity, lifecycle scope, leadership beyond the management tier, and the new change-management clause. Rules use context-aware matching: a commitment in a policy heading carries more weight than a passing mention, and negated language ("not yet implemented") reduces confidence rather than inflating it. The engine is deterministic — the same document always produces the same statuses.
2. AI-assisted findings (paid scans)
On full scans, every finding is then reviewed by an AI analysis layer that reads the actual evidence excerpts from your document and writes the assessment a junior auditor would: what is genuinely covered, what falls short of the 2026 expectation, and precisely what to change. The AI is constrained to the evidence found in your document — it cannot invent content that is not there — and the deterministic statuses remain the scoring backbone.
3. Evidence, not verdicts from nowhere
Every finding in the report shows the quoted passages from your documentation that drove it, alongside a confidence level. Where a document is too short to assess meaningfully, the report says so rather than producing a hollow score.
4. Nightly calibration
The engine is regression-tested every night against a multi-sector corpus of EMS documentation — from comprehensive integrated manuals to deliberately weak gap documents — spanning manufacturing, construction, healthcare, utilities, chemicals, food production and more. Any drift in scoring versus the saved baseline fails the check and blocks engine changes until reviewed.
What EMSist does not do
- It is not a certification audit and does not replace one — findings are an indicative gap analysis to direct your preparation.
- It assesses the documentation you provide. It cannot see your actual operations, records, or culture — an auditor can.
- It analyses up to 10 documents per scan, merging the strongest evidence per requirement. Include your EMS manual for the broadest clause coverage.
- Scanned-image PDFs without a text layer are read automatically with OCR (up to 15 pages per document).
